Before your visit

Five days of olive oil makes all the difference

Olive oil won’t dissolve the wax, but it makes it softer and far easier to remove — so your appointment is quicker and more comfortable.

Use olive oil drops for five days before your appointment.

We recommend Otex olive oil ear drops (around £3.99 on Amazon). Clinically recommended and medicinal grade, they help soften and remove hard wax and are suitable for adults, children and the elderly.

Common questions

Ear wax removal FAQs

What causes excessive ear wax?

Ears normally clear wax themselves, but it can become impacted — more likely if you are over 50, wear hearing aids or earplugs, use cotton buds, have narrow ear canals, or have a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis.

How long is a wax removal appointment?

If you have used olive oil drops or spray to soften the wax beforehand, the procedure shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes.

Can I have treatment on the same day as my consultation?

Yes, provided you have used the recommended ear drops for a minimum of five days before your consultation.

How often can I have ear wax removal?

There is no set time between treatments — some people need them less often than others. If you are concerned about how much wax you produce, please contact your GP.

What is the difference between microsuction and irrigation?

Microsuction uses a gentle vacuum under magnification to lift the wax out, with no water involved. Irrigation uses warm water delivered by a controlled electronic irrigator to flush softened wax away. Alison will recommend the method best suited to your ears.

Do you offer home visits?

Home visits are all we do. REMOVA is a fully mobile service, so Alison travels to you and carries out microsuction or irrigation in the comfort of your own home, throughout Warrington and the wider Cheshire area.
